decision to do this course

It was a few years ago that I heard about the Open University course on Darwin; it has taken up until now to actually sign up for it, the last chance of doing so since the course is being discontinued. During this time, I have read quite a bit of the set book, watched a few DVDs and also read other material relating to Darwin.

In fact, the decision to do this course was probably influenced by my reading of a book called A Very Short Introduction to Charles Darwin by   (publishers Oxford University Press) which is a good introduction to Charles Darwin and his work. Darwin was a contemporary of both Freud and Nietzche also Karl Marx but while their theories have not been scientifically proved and their value questioned, Darwin's theories have been found to be scientific.

His theories have also had knock on effects. From the very beginning there were implications that would have a profound effect on general religious outlook yet the theory has been applied to other disciplines too such as linguistics.

Darwin is commonly known as the man who said we are descended from monkeys yet his theory of evolution has much wider implications.
